WBSJ Rain Boots

Boots by the Wild Bird Society of Japan encapsulate their goals of supporting nature and enhancing access to it. They are items that began with ideas from members of the society, and their need for easy to transport, waterproof footwear. They grew in popularity through others that both wished to support the WBSJ, and had their own contexts for using lightweight rain shoes. The boots have become a much loved product in Japan, and a companion in many rainy terrains.

Story of the Boots

The origins of Wild Bird Society of Japan Rain Boots were in birdwatching needs. In the melting snow of the early spring, observing crane species in north Japan required a fair bit of walking. But birdwatchers struggled to find a suitable boot for the task. This was feedback that reached society in the late 1990s, with the need only partially answered when a member hit upon the idea of repurposing the boots used by rice farmers. Seeking a solution the WBSJ contacted the maker of the agricultural boots, and over a period of three years to 2004, worked together to develop a boot with birdwatchers in mind. Now equipped, members would be able to follow cranes, and easily remove the boot to replace in their bags for the journey home.

With this need answered, the Society did not envisage a second chapter in the boot’s history when from around 2006, they noticed a growing number of younger customers purchasing pairs at their Tokyo shop. Sometimes the customers even asked permission to buy the boots without immediate plans to watch birds. The answer of course was yes, with the growing demand in fact linked to summer music festivals and the potential for heavy storm rain.

The practical design of the boots actually lent them to multiple uses. From seeking birds and bands, to gardening, outdoor activities and navigating rainy cities. A number of design improvements were added, including a kick panel at the base of the sole to allow easy exit for the feet, and colourful drawcord clips to help distinguish pairs (a practical need when, as in Japan, it is common to take off footwear on entering a building or tent).

WBSJ boots have grown with their user base. From birdwatchers to music lovers, from city gardeners to dog walkers. All are to varying extents motivated by the desire to support the society in its work of preserving Japan’s nature, and enhancing access to it. In this sense boots are both a flagship product and a physical symbol of what the WBSJ does.
